Just this week, the FDA announced new sunscreen rules to protect the public from the confusing labels and false claims of protection on many sunscreen products. Even the local news did a segment on the anti-aging, money-saving benefits of SPF.
At the right level, SPF is the number one defense against aging skin. Use these easy tips daily to help make SPF more effective for protecting your skin and combatting the signs of aging.
- Use broad spectrum sun protection. This is the ultimate in protection and will be noted on the label.
- Apply your SPF of 15 or greater, at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. If you are battling aging skin or want to help prevent it, choose an SPF of 20 or higher.
- Reapply sunblock every 2 hours.
- Layer your SPF products. Use a moisturizer with SPF under your primer with SPF, under your makeup with SPF.
- If the situation allows, wear a hat and long sleeves and find shade for extra protection.
Just as skin types can vary, so can sun protection. Not all SPF products work the same for everyone. For those with sensitive skin, avoid the itching and redness that often accompanies an allergic reaction and choose sun protection for sensitive skin. As passionate as I am about the issue of defending your skin, I admit that even I have a hard time remembering to reapply my sunblock every 2 hours. But, I need to be as diligent as I am serious to fight those wrinkles!
