Don't Panic. It's Only Your Hair Fall-ing Out!

Fall in San Diego
I know it's Fall. I can tell by the changing color of the leaves, the cool chill in the air, the pumpkin patches popping up around every corner.

But the real give-away for me is that I start to shed my Summer coat. (That would be my hair)

This morning, I washed my hair and there it was. A sort of frightening sight if I hadn't known why it happened. My hair had come out in a bunch. More than usual. I reached down and pulled Cousin IT out of the drain cover. (Some call it a hair trap, but whatever you call it, you gotta have one.)

Has this ever happened to you? Did you sort of panic and then reach up to make sure you still had some hair left on your head?

Me too.

Let me put your mind at ease. Hair cycles. In a previous post I discussed the theory that hair grows faster in the Summer months. It usually grows thicker, as well. It's all about how hair cycles.

When hair cycles, it falls out. Period. Sometimes you notice, sometimes you don't. Often we only notice our hair coming out when we do something to manipulate it, like brush it or wash it.

But here is a quick reassurance that it will be OK. Before that hair falls out, it has already replaced itself. See, no cause for alarm. If you have recently had that Cousin IT-in-the-drain experience, you have witnessed this firsthand. It's fine.

The only time you should worry is if you discover small patches of actual baldness on your scalp. In that instance, you need to consult a physician.

Hair will cycle. And it stands to reason that if we grow more hair in the Summer (my theory, but an educated theory), we might have more to shed when the seasons change.

Hair's texture, fullness, dryness, etc. can all change with the seasons. What have you noticed about your hair? Please leave a comment and share your experience!

  1. Nope, no baldness over here but how funny, I was just noticing that my hair was falling out in strands. I thought it was a seasonal thing!
    Love you!!

  2. Hi Meghan! Thank you for stopping by and sharing!

Although yours is most likely seasonal, changes in diet and excessive exercise can also cause changes to the hair and the skin.

Being a marathon-er, your body is working so hard, it can sometimes steal nutrients that usually go to your hair and use them other places in your bod. Keep watching, as you are the best judge of what's happening.

Go Get 'Em in NY sister! XOXO
